Mediterranean Fan Palm    (Chamaerops humilis)

Mediterranean region

This hardy fan palm occurs throughout the Mediterranean region, from the coast to over 3000 feet.  In the mountains, it receives occasional snow cover.  It is widely found in poor, rocky terrain, and will adapt to many soil types but requires good drainage.  Easy to grow in the Phoenix area, a larger clump makes a striking specimen plant. Slow growing, it is a good container plant.  Best in full sun, but will retain an excellent appearance in partial shade.  Give moderate watering and occasional feeding.  Can use less water once established (1-2 years).  A new Moroccan variety “cerifera” with silver leaves is now available.

Very hardy palm suitable for desert or tropical landscapes.

Great in full sun with a low clumping growth habit (4" to 6 " year).

Very easy to grow.  Cold tolerant.
